The process of breaking the organic matter and settlement of waste at the bottom also happens in the second chamber and the water is further purified. The time required for this process is also less than the time taken by lower chamber.

The working of a septic tank is based on gravitational force. At places having topographical problems, a pump is used. The frequency of sludge formation in a tank is 0.05 cubic yards for a single person per year. The pumping of septic tank should be scheduled at regular interval of time to avoid problems due to overfilled sludge.
