Parents have eating disorders in children
Written by admin on March 15th, 2010There has been much discussion recently about the role of parents cause eating disorders in children, this is the case or not? It is a very sensitive issue because it is painful to think of the families, because it is a possible cause of your daughter / son, bulimia or anorexia.
I am a doctor and suffering from anorexia and bulimia for over 15 years. I have also participated in the treatment of hundreds of suffering eating disorders. I personally do not think a family to promote eating disorders with the wishes of their children. I would say no parents and family to do eat well.
But I know first hand that parenting and family atmosphere of mental and emotional problems diagnosed parents to contribute significantly to the development of eating disorders in children.
There is a lot of research to examine the role of genetic predisposition for eating disorders. Yes, eating disorders have a genetic component as well, but only the sensitivity to develop an eating disorder is not the same disease that people can inherit.
You may also inherit certain personality traits that increase the possibilities for the development of eating disorders: how perfectionism, the tendency to anxiety and depression, competitiveness, impulsiveness, and extreme stubbornness. All these people may be vulnerable to developing eating disorders.
It’s the environment; the vulnerability of people makes the disease. The way people make their life from birth to the genetic vulnerability that can lead to disease.
The first and most important is the human environment is the family. Often people with eating disorders such as childhood, a tense family environment in which parents were very strict and controlling. Children in families, it is not much room to experiment and be free. These parents do not let their kids find their own path in life, such as forced labor on the wrists, which are the trailers and is governed by strict rules.
In families so that children are eating disorders as a way to control your life, this is the best, and find emotional escape the room of her eating disorder.
The other family is overprotective book. The protection function based on the child’s behavior so many restrictions, is suitable for the child to find his freedom and come out with things like food, eating and weight management. These parents may not allow their children to be what the mental image of them is or how they think the child should be different. See results of children only in terms of their own desires and opinions.
Most parents in these families are still the best for their children and do not realize that what is bad for the child. Many parents have done their own emotional problems, which are still unresolved and deeply rooted in childhood. Some parents may also have mental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and personality disorders diagnosed. Because these disorders are never diagnosed with parents who do not know and continue to exert enormous pressure on children and other relatives.
Many doctors and therapists believe that parents are responsible for the disease to their children is not a good idea because parents may feel guilty and ashamed about the way the same. These feelings of guilt and shame that parents can take to help the child recover and parents may even refuse to participate in the recovery of the child’s program.
However, it is shown that when the family environment is not the same as love, challenge, and too restrictive, the child has much room for improvement.
The purpose of writing was not too blame for the behavior of parents, but only to families who suffer from eating disorder that some changes have become accustomed to the atmosphere if the family wants to help warn her lover again.
